Do you need to take out travel insurance when heading downunder?

The answer is yes. If you are a British citizen visiting any country outside of the UK then you will need travel insurance (even visiting Jersey or EU states under EHIC).

There is a difference with Australia and New Zealand as both countries have a reciprical deal with the UK for health. New Zealand states that a British passport holder (not a permanent resident of the UK, you must be a British citizen) has the same rights as a New Zealander for treatment in public hospitals - you can read the official text here >.

It is worth noting that there are many exceptions in Australia to the reciprocal agreement. Exclusions under the reciprocal agreement include pharmaceuticals when not a hospital in-patient, use of ambulance services and medical evacuations, which are very expensive.
