Travel Cover if you don’t have a registered GP
The actual definition of being UK resident can vary from insurer to insurer too, which can be a real minefield to navigate! Some travel insurers stipulate that you must have been present in the UK for six months before leaving. Some state you must be have been resident in the UK for six months before, but fail to stipulate if you have to have been actually present in the country. You can still be classed as resident and be outside the UK. Yes, it’s confusing, but more insurers are being precise in their definition. Basically you need to ALWAYS READ THE SMALL PRINT of these insurers.

The “Repatriation” Problem
Travel insurance is designed to get you back to your home. If a UK insurer sells a policy to someone living in, say, Canada, their legal obligation in a medical emergency would be to fly that person back to Canada.
The Issue: UK-based insurers are set up to repatriate people to the UK. Managing a flight from a third country back to a different home country is a logistical and financial headache they aren’t usually staffed to handle.
The NHS Safety Net
Most UK policies assume the policyholder has a UK GP (General Practitioner) and access to the NHS.
Why it matters: If you get sick abroad and return to the UK, the insurer’s job usually ends once you land. The NHS then takes over your long-term recovery.
The Risk: For a non-resident, the insurer might be on the hook for private long-term care or expensive international medical transfers because the person doesn’t have a “free” healthcare system to fall back on in the UK.

Legal & Regulatory Boundaries
Insurance is heavily regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
-
Licensing: A UK insurer might only be licensed to sell products to people “habitually resident” in the UK. Selling to someone in another country could technically count as “trading” in that country, which would require them to follow that country’s specific tax and insurance laws. Most companies find it easier to just say “no” to non-residents.
Risk Assessment
Insurers love data. They know the risks associated with someone living in the UK. They don’t necessarily have the data to accurately price a policy for someone living elsewhere, as the cost of living, medical standards, and legal systems vary wildly by country.
What are your options?
If you are struggling to find cover, you generally have three routes:
-
Buy from your home country: This is the standard advice. You should buy insurance in the country where you actually live, as they are equipped to repatriate you back there.
-
Specialist “Expat” or “Global” Insurance: Companies like World Nomads, SafetyWing, or IMG specialize in “nomad” or global insurance. They don’t care where you live, but they are often more expensive than a standard high-street UK policy.
-
“Already Travelling” Policies: If you’ve already left home and forgot to buy insurance, search specifically for “already travelling” cover. Standard policies are void if you buy them after your trip has started.
